The Earth Shine Farm Story

Through the eyes of the astronauts, we have seen more clearly than ever before this precious earth essence that must be preserved. It might be given a new name borrowed from space language: “Earth Shine.”
- From "Earth Shine" by Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Our small, sustainable family farm is nestled in Michigan's Saginaw Valley. Its name taken from the Anne Morrow Lindbergh quote above speaks of our long-standing desire to provide wholesome, natural food while treating the animals and the environment with a great degree of reverence and respect. What we didn't anticipate when we set these priorities was that the result would be so incredibly, deliciously different.

This all began as a commitment to our family. In the late 1980's, we began raising a few chickens for really no other reason than to put healthier, tastier food on our own table.

Time passed, Frank took an early retirement, our own brood began to leave the roost and, being the slightly obsessive folks we are, things kind of snowballed. Suddenly, we found ourselves reading, breeding, networking, consulting, and loving almost every minute of it. We had become… chicken farmers, albeit of a somewhat different ilk (we had many regional chicken farmers and even the local 4-H club either scratching their heads, shaking them in disbelief, or just plain snickering).

Many lessons, several breeds and a slew of accolades from nationally-acclaimed 'foodies' later, we've added another goal to the heap: We'd like nothing more than to redefine chicken in North America.

Being able to provide you pastured, heirloom chickens this delicious and at this level of quality gives us an immeasurable sense of pleasure and gratitude, as does your interest in Earth Shine Farm Pastured Heirloom Chickens. Again, thank you for that interest. To slightly paraphrase an old Lefty Frizell song, "We're the happiest man and woman in Saginaw (Valley), Michigan." And it just keeps getting better.

Peace on Earth,
Frank and Laura Kay Jones
